I am surprisingly amused by what we learned about yesterday in my religion class. We were learning about the Daoist concept of Wu Wei which literally means "non action" or "not action". It is a somewhat complex concept that I will try to explain to my understanding of it.
Wu Wei is aware non-action or aware inactivity, which seems like a bizarre concept. It is not as simple as being knowledgeable of your surroundings and and forcing actions, but rather is more around the concept that in any situation you are aware of what is going on.
Daoism is all about finding Dao, which translates to "the way". The way to find "the way" is to act like water and flow around obstacles from every situation that you encounter.
Water does not contend with things, it flows around the obstacles of life. It is better for water to flow around an obstacle than for it to force the obstacle out of the way. Just as water act, so should your life be. You should flow with your actions until the situations unfolds in front of you. You do not force a solution, but rather you go with what is necessary to do.
For example: The building you are in is on fire. You do not stand in one spot in hopes that you will not be consumed, for that is like forcing a rock. You flow through the situation to get yourself out of the fire and pass the obstacles as they approach you.
Through the first half of this video, Bruce Lee talks about how you do not act, but stay aware. This is the idea of Wu Wei. "I" does not exist in the situation. You do not think, but you do not dream. It is like you are in neutral state, but the neutrality is good. In the case, you are not what is attacking, but rather, it almost becomes subconscious when you attack. You flow though the situation of the fight without planning, "I will punch him first, then a,b,c, etc.".
There is no formula to finding Dao ("the way") because water flows around the obstacles. You cannot focus on one method thinking that it will keep you flowing around obstacles. The example of the finger and the moon shows this well. You cannot focus on the finger (a method to achieve the way; thinking) or you will miss the heavenly glory of feelings. If you miss where the water is flowing, you could end up in the middle of a metaphorical forest with no signs where flowing water is.
Sometimes in life you will not always win. Do not try to fight the obstacles, but rather wait. Fighting may be fruitless and result in nothing, but you can wait in the aware state and wait until that opportunity arises again. Waiting will keep you flowing like water.
I do not claim to be an expert, but rather this is what I understand Wu Wei to be. It is an interesting Daoist ideal that pretty much encompasses Daoism. There is more to Daoism than just Wu Wei, including Yin and Yang, but that may have to be explained another time.
Have a great day!
